Family has always been a central theme in my work. I’ve been photographing my own family for nearly four decades now, with my 8x10” camera. So the purpose of this shoot was actually twofold. First, I was there to contribute to Showing. I wanted to capture the look and feel of a pregnancy in academia. But also, on a more personal level, I was there to shoot Julie, my niece and godchild, and someone whom I’ve been photographing for her entire life. The Showing photo is just another part of that continuum.

When I was first contacted about Showing, I knew I’d have to work quickly, because Julie was already quite far along. I drove four hours up to Ithaca College, where Julie teaches in the Department of Occupational Therapy. I managed to arrive just before graduation. Seeing her in her doctoral robe left me brimming with pride, but that’s not exactly unusual when it comes to my nieces and nephews.
